Ravelry: A Guide
(Choose a username carefully - This is a REAL LIFE website with members from many countries and backgrounds. You will also be joining a school-based group, so appropriateness matters!)
Go to www.ravelry.com. Register an account. Need more help? Try this video tutorial.
Poke around the website. Look at the “getting started” tab, if you aren’t comfortable exploring.
Go to “groups” and search for WRSD Textiles. Join the group. This will be a vehicle for sharing your work, connecting with other students, and asking questions.
Research a pattern. Using the “pattern” tab, search for “washcloth.” Please select KNIT or CROCHET, based on your choice. If you have not yet decided, leave the section unchecked.
Click on a few patterns. Notice the suggested yarns for all of them. Why might cotton be the most common yarn used for a washcloth?

You will soon be learning the basic stitches of your chosen craft. If you are brave, venture forth! If you would like some one-on-one help, now is the time to contact your teacher and schedule an in-person tutorial for basic skills like casting on, knits, purls, or single and double crochets.
A few more helpful hints, here.
For your first project, you will require COTTON yarn and either size 10 (6 mm) knitting needles or a size 5.5 (I) crochet hook. These can be found in craft stores, at department stores, online, or possibly from a relative or friend. You can also make your own, if you have dowelling, a pencil sharpener, fine grade sand paper and wax paper. Make sure you have your beginning materials before your meeting OR let your teacher know they need to be provided.

KNITThese four intro projects are complete with video tutorials and other resources for knitting. Knitting is neither left or right handed (although each dominance will find different stitches easier than others.) One style holds yarn in the right hand, one style holds in in the left. There are benefits to both.
Completing the four washcloths will complete the FAS 1190 module, as well as prepare you with necessary skills for the next course in your pathway. |
